Magnetic Particle Inspection

(MPI) Crack Testing

In detail…

MPI is a method of Crack Testing it can be used to find surface and near surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials such as steel and iron. During MPI the specimen is magnetised either locally or overall and if the material is sound the magnetic flux is predominantly inside the material.

If however during the Magnetic Particle Testing there is a surface-breaking flaw, the magnetic field is distorted, causing local magnetic flux leakage around the flaw. This leakage flux is displayed by covering the surface with very fine iron particles applied either dry or suspended in a liquid.

The particles accumulate at the regions of flux leakage, producing a build-up, which can be seen visually even when the crack opening is very narrow. During Crack Testing a crack is indicated as a line of iron powder particles on the surface.

Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI)

Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI)
Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI)

In detail…

Dye penetrant inspection (DP), also called liquid penetrate inspection (LPI) or penetrant testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics).

The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability.

LPI is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.

Visual Inspection (Optical)

Microscopes & Magnifiers

In detail…

Visual inspection is the monitoring of specific parameters by visual and optical assessments of test objects and surfaces using visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

BHA Inspection

The inspection of bottom hole
assemblies

In detail…

Inspection of Stabilizers, Hole Openers, Jars, Motors, LWD/MWD/PD, Sand Control, Subs, Drill Collars, Hevi-Wate™, Fishing Tools, Coil Tubing, Varco Tools.
Lifting & Testing Equipment.

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing involves pulsed beams of ultrasound

In detail…

Ultrasonic Testing involves pulsed beams of ultrasound, using sound waves to detect flaws or measure material thickness.

Short wavelength and high frequency mechanical waves can travel large distances in fine grain metal, in the form of a divergent wave with progressive attenuation.

Hardness Testing

Testing for all solid materials

In detail…

A hardness test is typically performed by pressing a specifically dimensioned and loaded object (indenter) into the surface of the material you are testing.

The hardness is determined by measuring the depth of indenter penetration or by measuring the size of the impression left by an indenter.
